The League to Save Lake Tahoe will host its annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanups at five locations throughout Lake Tahoe on July 5. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to join the effort from Tahoe City to Nevada Beach and South Shore.
“Tahoe’s beaches see a lot of wear and tear during the Fourth of July,” said Marilee Movius, the League’s community engagement manager. “We’re excited to bring together visitors and community members alike to help the lake recover. We also want to spread the message that everyone can help take care of Lake Tahoe’s beaches year-round by packing out what they pack in.”
Thousands of visitors flock to Tahoe’s beautiful beaches for Fourth of July festivities, and don’t always pack out their trash. Last year, the League’s July 5 beach cleanup volunteers removed 370 pounds of trash and 60 pounds of recyclables. The most common items were cigarette butts, which are very harmful to wildlife, and beer bottles.
The League will provide reusable bags and buckets. Volunteers are invited to bring reusable water bottles and gloves if they have them. All volunteers will receive a raffle ticket.
The League is excited to partner with several public agencies this year to ensure beaches are kept clean and beautiful, including the US Forest Service, Tahoe City Public Utility District, and City of South Lake Tahoe.
The League also appreciates the generous support of the following businesses, who are sponsoring beach locations: Ridge Resort, Lake of the Sky Outfitters, The North Face, Grass Roots Natural Foods, SUP Tahoe, and Willard’s Sport Shop.
